Transport in South Africa

Trains

This is the slowest transportation option in South Africa.

They’re more comfortable than buses and they’re a great way to pass through the country’s huge openness.

Shosholoza Meyl Railways is a service which runs through major cities.

There are different classes available, in the tourist class you can get sleeper accomodation with bathrooms and showers.

On some routes Shosholoza Meyl has premier class trains. They have air conditioned cars and amenities like bedding and hot served meals.

Online booking is not available but you can book through external agencies.

For travel in luxury, Rovos Rail is on point. Travellers are treated to gourmet meals, butler service and sometimes even bathtubs.

You can also explore Blue Train as a luxury option.

Bus

Most places in South Africa can be reached by the following bus companies.

Intercape, Greyhound and Translux.

Buses are safe and affordable.

They’re air conditioned and mostly have onboard toilets.

The company ‘Intercape’ has a Sleepliner fleet with seats that are reclinable up to 150 degrees, making them ideal for long trips.

On short routes ‘Baz Bus’ is an affordable hop-off and hop-on option.

South Africa by Taxi

Online apps that compete with Uber in South Africa are Taxify, Zebra cabs and Orange cabs.

You can also take a minibus taxi which can fit 16 passengers, however, because of rash driving and poor driving standards, we do not recommend it.
